Students are required to have their own equipment to gather audio, photos and video. This equipment is essential for any journalist working today and is increasingly used in other journalism courses as well.

Students are required to own or purchase the following equipment:

  • Smartphone and/or a camera and digital audio recorder
  • Headphones for editing audio and video
  • SDHC memory card to shoot video with T5i DSLR. Class 10, 32GB recommended. (Approx. $15)
  • Flash drive or external hard drive. 32GB or more recommended. External hard drives must be formatted for Mac to be used in the lab. (Approx. $15-$70)

If you have questions about equipment or do not have the means to purchase these items, please talk to me in person.

Students are responsible for hosting their own web-based projects. I will cover free options (like, but students may also wish to invest in their own self-hosted website which offers more control and flexibility. I can recommend options at the appropriate time in the semester.

Students can check out higher-quality equipment (DSLRs, video cameras, microphones, tripods, chords, and other items) from the Journalism Department Office.

All equipment must be checked out through the CCCA Equipment Booking website. You must reserve equipment ahead of time. (How to book and check out tutorial video)

Location: Pick up journalism equipment at 6 High Street (RTF equipment is checked out in Bozorth)

Spring 2017 Hours: TBA

Some equipment — i.e., Canon T5i, Rode mic, tripods, VR viewers — can be checked out for three (3) days. Other equipment — i.e., Nikon D3100s (don’t shoot video) — can be checked out for one week. Equipment that is due over the weekend must be returned first thing Monday morning.

Rowan University provides the lab computers installed with software needed for this course. The instructor will also recommend free software and programs that students can use on personal computers.
