Ten Ways to Improve Your Multimedia

  1. Figure out which media elements are best for your story?
  2. Plan.
  3. Capture people and action, not things. Get portraits of every person you interview.
  4. Shoot as many photos as possible. But don’t shoot too much video. Photos are easier to edit than video.
  5. Use a tripod.
  6. Use rule of thirds.
  7. Shoot in sequences. Get closer. Throw out your extreme wide shot.
  8. Video is 51% audio.
  9. Ask questions that bring out anecdotes (what is happening?) and moments of reflection (why should people care?).
  10. Leave yourself out of the audio and video. “In their own words” works better on the web than voice-overs.
