    Kristen’s idea:

Valerie Jasper goes to car meets and fixes cars because she has loved cars for a long time. Trying to explore her struggle as a female working on cars, she says it’s “terrible” and she faces prejudice.

UrbanPromise is a charity in Camden that has a Step-Team that allows teens to express their faith and religion through dance, beats, and rhythms.

  3. dan kov says:

My story is about my friend Steve who wrote a children’s book about Lucy the Elephant, a tourist attraction in Margate, NJ. He wrote the book because he is a weirdo and this would surely make for an interesting story. I think. We’ll see.

  4. Dominic and Maranda says:

Our story would be about Tom O’Keefe, who is a beekeeper in Glassboro who makes honey from local pollen, because he likes to. (There’s probably more of a story to it…we’ll find it out)
    -OR-
A local glassblower who still practices the art of glassblowing in Glassboro because of the history of the town. (Maybe? Or maybe he just likes it…)
    -OR-
Tour guides at Gabriel Davies Tavern in Glendora NJ who appreciate the history of the “haunted” building. The building was a hospital during the revolutionary war.

  5. Kevin & Michelle says:

Kevin & Michelle’s story pitch: Kevin has gotten in contact with a woman who runs the drive-in theatre in Vineland as one of her jobs. Also, Michelle knows of a NJ actor, Stink Fisher, who owns the Pop Shop (a soda shop) in Collingswood.

My story is about a hardcourt bike polo, which is a underground sport league in Cherry Hill, new jersey and philadelphia http://leagueofbikepolo.com/club/philadelphia-bicycle-polo

You’re going to get some fantastic photos! Love it. Can’t wait to see them!

    Kristen

  10. dan kov says:

Sounds great. Would like to read this.

I like the angle- a women working on cars and her struggles because of it

  12. Dominic and Maranda says:

Just make sure that you work hard on making sure that you are getting a lot of different photos, and not just of Val with her car!

  13. Anonymous says:

Haha Excited to see a weirdo in his element!

    Kristen

  14. Kevin G says:

Interesting idea. Are you going to talk to him in Margate or just at his house? Being in the setting where Lucy is would probably be cool.

  15. Anonymous says:

the glassblower would make for fantastic pictures

  16. Anonymous says:

I think your story should focus more on say “Valerie Jasper faces prejudice as a female car buff because…” that’s the interesting part.

  17. Anonymous says:

solid idea. Her being a woman is a good element

  18. Dominic and Maranda says:

I don’t know anything about Lucy the Elephant, but I hear about it (her?) a lot, so this could be really cool!

  19. Anonymous says:

Curious about their relationships with other step teams.

  20. Kevin G says:

All 3 are great ideas. The tour guide story is possibly the most underground but the beekeeper & glassblower will probably make for great pictures

  21. dan kov says:

That sounds like it would BEE a good story. Check into whether he was interviewed previously by a Rowan student — I think I recall somebody doing a bee-related story last semester… Get buzzing.

  22. Anonymous says:

I think the beekeeper story would be awesome, but you may have to put on lots of protective gear that would hinder you getting the shots you really REALLY want.

The glassblower would be hard for audio, though.

I love them both, despite these problems… just some hurdles to jump through.

    Kristen

  23. Anonymous says:

I like the idea, but try to think of how you would be able to show action of him.

  24. Anonymous says:

That sounds really cool! So many good pictures of shiny bikes. If they are really enthusiastic, their audio will be great too. Lots of great characters!

  25. Anonymous says:

Referring to Dan’s story… I’m kind of tech challenged sometimes.

  26. Dominic and Maranda says:

The Pop Shop is really awesome, and would make some great photos! Also, Stink Fisher is really cool! The drive-in might be a slightly difficult just because you’d have to go at night and everything. For both of these ideas, make sure you check with people who are there before you take photos of people!

  27. dan kov says:

I like the drive-in idea. Ask her about it being a prime makeout spot, what inspired her to open a drive-in, how she feels about not watching a movie projected onto a giant screen with audio coming through your radios, etc.

  28. Anonymous says:

I would not worry about the local glassbower. You can do something interesting with the “haunted building.” You can not only have pictures and maybe a video, but you can add an interactive map of the tour.

  29. Anonymous says:

what if you focused more on the creator of the elephant instead of the guy who wrote a kids book about it..

  30. Anonymous says:

I do like the beekeeper story idea a lot too. you could have a string of photos of the bees being released and the swarm they create after

  31. Anonymous says:

Be careful reporting on a beekeeper. Great audio though.

  32. Anonymous says:

The first one would be good because it’s not often that these are still around. the set up would create some cool photos

  33. markbg says:

Sounds like it has potential. The car meet (illegal?) sounds like the most likely angle to make it an “underground” story. If it’s an underground event and she is the only woman that makes it even more interesting. Get lots of chrome and sounds of engines and squeeling tires.

  34. markbg says:

So what’s the underground angle? Lucy is iconic. Children’s books are pretty standard. Not sure what “weirdo” means…but maybe that will be it. You need a bigger “why” than weirdo.

If it does work out…you need to photograph him at Lucy. Just him sitting with a book won’t be visual enough.

  35. markbg says:

The tavern sounds like the most “underground” story. The other two seem fun, but not sure what makes them “out of the mainstream.” You probably need to do some reporting to find out what will work.

Is the glassblower the last guy who does this? Is it really obscure or pretty well known?

Here is the bee story from last semester. It’s not the same guy. It may give you ideas of what to do or what not to do.

  36. markbg says:

The drive in theater sounds a little more “underground.” Is it well known? Who goes there? Is it dilapidated or fixed up? Is it going out of business or thriving? All of these things probably matter. This story might give you ideas of how to approach it.
    http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/art-entertainment-sports/item/23028-drive-ins

The soda shop sounds nice, but not sure how it’s “underground.”

  37. markbg says:

Sounds like it has potential. What kinds of motorcycles? The wackier the better. Who are these people? The wackier the better.

Again, lots of chrome and engine sounds. And go for a ride. You have to go for a ride. Motorcycles sitting in a parking lot are less interesting.

  38. markbg says:

I like it. Sounds goofy, unknown, and could have nice visuals. Where in NJ to they ride/play?

Also if this doesn’t work out for this assignment, it could make for some nice video. Video would capture the motion and action.

  39. mbg says:

This could be a great audio slide show – visual and great sounds.

Not sure what the underground angle is exactly….but I like the mix of dance, music, urban youth, and religion.

    Do it.
